Bathroom drains clog differently from every other drain in the house. Their enemy is not grease but hair - bound together with soap scum, shampoo residue and toothpaste into dense mats that form in the trap, at the stopper, and in the first stretch of branch line. Bathroom drain cleaning clears those mats properly and checks the branch behind them, because a shower that pools around your feet is a drain telling you its pipe has become a filter.

Bathroom clogs are also the most underestimated. A slow tub seems like a nuisance rather than a problem, so it is ignored for months while the mat thickens, traps more hair, and starts to hold a permanent puddle of grey water in the line. That standing, soapy water is unhygienic, it smells, and it is corrosive to older traps and fittings. A bathroom line cleaned at the slow stage is a short, simple visit; the same line a year later can mean a seized, corroded trap that needs replacing as well.

Signs you need bathroom drain cleaning

Water pools in the shower or tub while you use it

The most common bathroom sign. A healthy shower drain takes the full flow without any pooling at all.

The sink drains slowly and burps

Hair mats at the stopper and in the trap restrict the sink; trapped air escapes back as it drains.

A sour or musty smell from the drain

Decomposing hair and soap in the trap and overflow channel produce the classic bathroom drain odor.

Black or dark slime around the stopper

Biofilm growing on the mat in the pipe works its way up to the visible fittings.

Gurgling in the tub when the toilet flushes

Shared branch lines mean a restriction in the bathroom group affects neighbouring fixtures too.

The plunger helps for a week, then it slows again

The mat was pushed or compressed, not removed. It re-expands and catches new hair immediately.

What causes it

Hair is the structure and soap is the glue. A single long hair caught on a stopper post or a rough joint collects others; soap scum - the waxy residue of soap reacting with hard water - binds the bundle into a mat that water can barely pass. Toothpaste and hair products add grit and body. In showers, body oils and conditioner complete the coating. The result grows exactly where it is hardest to reach with a plastic strip: at and just beyond the trap.

Two bathroom-specific traps catch the unwary. The tub overflow channel collects its own sludge and smell, so a tub can stink even with a clear drain. And in older bathrooms, the trap and branch may be aged metal that has corroded rough inside - a surface that grabs hair far faster than smooth modern pipe, and one reason some bathrooms clog every few months no matter how careful the household is.

How the work is done

1. Remove and clean the stopper and trap area

Many bathroom clogs live right at the stopper mechanism. It comes out, the mat comes with it, and the difference is tested immediately.

2. Cable the branch when the clog is deeper

If the stopper was clean or the drain is still slow, a small powered cable works the branch line to the stack, pulling the mat out rather than pushing it down.

3. Check the overflow and vent behaviour

Persistent odors and gurgling get a specific check, because the fix for an overflow-channel problem is different from a drain problem.

4. Flush and flow-test

The tub or shower runs at full flow. A cleaned bathroom drain should show no pooling and no delay at all.

5. Advise on catchers that actually fit

The right hair catcher for your specific drain style - flat, basket or pop-up - makes the next clog far less likely.

What bathroom drain cleaning costs

Bathroom drain cleaning typically runs $99-$400. A stopper-and-trap mat is the quick, low end. Cabling a branch line, dealing with a seized old trap, or clearing several bathroom fixtures in one visit moves the price up the range. If a trap or stopper needs replacing, your contractor can price the part and fitting separately from the cleaning when you call.

Mention every affected fixture on the call. A slow tub on its own is one job; a slow tub plus a gurgling sink plus a toilet that burps is a branch-line job, and it is better priced and equipped correctly from the start.

Before and after: what cleaning changes

Two states of a line, side by side in one frame - drag your eye across the divider. On the left, the inside story of most repeat clogs: corrosion, scale and buildup narrowing the pipe year after year. On the right, pipework running clean and full-bore after proper cleaning. No chemicals poured in and hoped for - the material is physically removed.

Can you handle it yourself first?

A plastic hair strip or removing and cleaning the stopper is a genuinely good first step - a large share of bathroom clogs live there. Baking soda and vinegar make foam but do not dissolve hair mats in any meaningful way, and chemical openers are a poor match for hair too; they work slowly, sit against traps and seals, and frequently fail. If the stopper and trap are clear and the drain is still slow, the mat is in the branch, and that is cable work.

Questions, answered

Why does my shower pool even though I use a hair catcher?

Catchers reduce hair dramatically but the mat often predates the catcher, or fine hair and soap scum pass through and build beyond the trap. A professional cleaning resets the line; the catcher then does a much better job of keeping it clear.

Can you clear a tub and sink on the same visit?

Yes, and it is efficient. Bathroom fixtures share branch lines, so clearing the group together both costs less than separate visits and tells the technician more about where the restriction really is.

Is the black slime in my drain harmful?

It is biofilm - a colony of bacteria and mould feeding on soap and hair residue. It is unsightly and smelly rather than usually dangerous, but it signals a mat in the pipe. Cleaning the line removes it at the source.

Why does the bathroom smell after cleaning the drain?

Check the overflow channel in the tub and the stopper mechanism, both of which hold their own sludge. If the smell survives a thorough clean of both, a dry trap or a vent issue is the next suspect, and your contractor can check.

How fast do bathroom drains re-clog?

On smooth modern pipe with a catcher fitted, a cleaned line can stay clear for years. Older corroded traps catch hair much faster, and replacing a rough old trap often ends a cycle of repeat clogs.
